Mais cette adaptation de la Comtesse de Ségur est endiablée et retorse, le format carré au lieu de rétrécir le champ ouvre tous les possibles. Caméra à l’épaule, Honoré est prêt à suivre la petite Sophie dans toutes ses frasques et jeune Caroline Grant, cinq ans, déploie toute son énergie à incarner la pestouille, elle en fait parfois trop, joue même un peu faux par moments, mais ce cabotinage charmant fait partie du projet, lui donne son aspect fabriqué et théâtral renforcé par le générique final, son aura de conte à la fois vieillot et furieusement y est de nos souvenirs de lectures lointaines les poissons martyrisés, la poupée aux jambes fondues, le thé boueux… Christophe Honoré nous entraîne à sa suite, dans un jardin extraordinaire, où les animaux – hérissons et écureuils — sont dessinés et animés. Les trois mères interprétées par Golshifteh Farahani, Anaïs Demoustier et Muriel Robin, actrices venues d’horizons très différents, entrent dans des clichés pour mieux s’en échapper. La reconstitution est jolie sans être mièvre et sent volontairement sa malle à déguisements, les anachronismes sont délicieux. Il y a de l’artifice ici, voulu et assumé, et c’est tout un art !
